MFA Press Release: Congratulatory Letters from Singapore Leaders to President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang of the People's Republic of China, 18 March 2018

     President Halimah Yacob and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong have written to President Xi Jinping to convey their congratulations on his re-appointment as President of the People’s Republic of China. 

     Prime Minister Lee also wrote to Premier Li Keqiang to congratulate him on his re-appointment as Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.

     Over the past five years, you have led China to new achievements amidst an uncertain and challenging international environment. Your government has shown great determination to improve the lives of the Chinese people.  I am confident that, under your strong leadership, China will continue to forge ahead and realise its vision for a new era. 

     Singapore and China enjoy excellent relations underpinned by wide-ranging cooperation, which has expanded to new areas such as the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity, China’s Belt and Road Initiative, as well as new initiatives to facilitate closer cooperation on finance, and legal and judicial matters.  We share a common interest in preserving a free trading system and maintaining global peace and stability, which has benefitted both our countries.  As ASEAN Chair in 2018 and the current Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, Singapore will work with China and other ASEAN members to further broaden and deepen ASEAN-China cooperation.      Singapore and China share a close and longstanding friendship.  Our bilateral cooperation continues to keep up with the changing interests and priorities of our people, and has expanded to new areas, such as the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity, China’s Belt and Road Initiative, finance, legal and judicial matters.  We share a common interest in preserving the global free trade system as well as maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world.  As the current ASEAN Chair and Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, Singapore will continue to work with fellow ASEAN Member States and China to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation between ASEAN and China.
